When I created the small business version, I made the design choice to not make the small business version overly complex in having both a sub-category and category column. From a tax / CPA perspective, I felt it more efficient to only deal with one category column to populate for categorizing business income and expenses. The Biz Name column is handy when you are using the same bank account for two or more businesses, and/or when you need to denote that an expense was for personal use instead of small business use.
So the small business version doesn’t have the sub-category column. The memo column can be handy to designate any notes or tags about the entry though.
Please don’t attempt to add a sub-category column, as the current macros for splitting a transaction and future transactions, etc., will stop working correctly as they are currently hard-coded to assume the category column is in “J”. I do hope to update this logic later this year to allow for more customization without macros breaking.
Note: The USA IRS form Schedule C, has a business expenses list with 20 broad categories that include:
Advertising
Car and truck expenses
Commissions and fees, contract labor
Depletion
Depreciation and section 179 expense deduction
Employee benefit programs
Insurance, interest
Legal and professional services
Office expense
Pension and profit-sharing plans
Rent or lease
Repairs and maintenance
Supplies
Taxes and licenses
Travel and meals
Utilities
Wages
